The uniformed officer who had been tasked with interviewing Deanna Merton was waiting for Josiah and Lilith as they returned back to the station.

He followed them into Josiah’s office.

Once Lilith and Josiah were settled, the young officer said, “I talked to Deanna Merton. She is most definitely pregnant, and she confirmed that the child was Kenneth’s.”

“Was she angry about the situation?” Josiah asked.

“No, he had promised her that he would break off his relationship with Misty Rose and marry her. She even had a ring to prove it,” the officer explained.

“That would certainly stir up a hornet’s nest as far as Misty Rose is concerned,” Josiah said.

“Apparently it did. Misty Rose apparently confronted the girl, called her a tart, and informed Deanna that it really didn’t matter what Deanna did or what Kenneth said, because the man always returned to her,” the officer went on.

Misty Rose left that little tidbit out when we were talking to her.

“Deanna is only eighteen. She honestly thought that there was a happily ever after for her and Kenneth. Now she’s heartbroken. When I talked to her, she was in the middle of packing. She’s going to head back to San Jose, California, where her parents live,” the officer reported.

“Thanks,” Josiah responded.

Nodding his head at both Josiah and Lilith, he headed out.

“I really don’t think that she had anything to do with the situation,” Lilith said. “She sounds like an innocent victim that got caught up in a con man’s web and is a victim in all of this.”

“I do believe that you are right,” Josiah said. “And even if Baylor didn’t have an alibi, this would make him less of a suspect, since it would be a great way to keep Kenneth away from Misty Rose.”

Trying to find a lead, Josiah called up Jennifer, the lead of the forensics team.

“Please tell me that you found something interesting about the suicide note,” he begged.

“We’re still working on that. However, we did find something else that was interesting. Misty Rose was nice enough to let Kenneth check his email account on her computer. We were able to get access to that. Kenneth had definitely made some formidable enemies,” Jennifer reported. “Clementhea and members of her group, The Vengeful Victims, had sent several threatening messages to the so-called guru.”

“Anything particularly interesting?” Josiah asked.

“Actually, there was one specific message that made my spidey senses tingle. Someone had sent him an email from the group that read, ‘Stay away from cliff edges or the winds of justice might sweep you off of your feet’,” Jennifer quoted.

“That does sound very suspicious,” Josiah noted. “Keep up the good work, and please let me know if you found anything else that might help.”

“I sure will,” the woman said as she ended the call.

“What do you think? Shall we go down to Clementhea’s shop or call her and see if she’ll talk to us here?” he asked.

“I think that Clementhea might be willing to come in, since she discovered that we have no problem visiting her at her nail salon,” Lilith said.
